Safebusters & John Tann Safe

Got called out to this lovely old John Tann safe. The customer had the keys but the door wouldn't open…

Safebusters were called out to an elegant, vintage John Tann safe. The owner had the keys—but frustratingly, the door refused to budge.

First, we drilled a small 6 mm probe hole and slid in an endoscope to check the boltwork. Everything looked to be retracting correctly on the inside. We tried pulling the door repeatedly—shoulder to the steel—but still nothing. Cue plenty of puzzled glances, shoulder shrugs, and head-scratching.

Then I caught sight of a forklift passing by—this was at a builders’ merchant, after all. With a bit of friendly persuasion, we got the forklift driver to apply a gentle tug. It took a monumental push, but finally—click!—the door sprang open, much to my immense relief.

Inside, we discovered the culprit: the door had sagged by about 2 mm, and a tiny scrap of paper—no larger than a postage stamp—had jammed the bottom, blocking the boltwork.

As they say, every day’s a school day!

Six Lever Brass Lock

Our safe engineer Will picking an old six lever brass lock in this beautiful circa 1900’s safe…

 Vintage Six-Lever Brass Lock Pick & Re-Key – A Craftsmanship Triumph at Safebusters.co.uk

Our skilled safe engineer, Will, @safebusters.co.uk, recently tackled a beautiful circa 1900s safe featuring an old six-lever brass lock—a classic design renowned for robustness and pick-resistance.

🧠 Masterful Non-Destructive Picking

Lever tumbler locks use a series of levers that must each lift to a specific height to clear the bolt stump. Vintage six-lever brass models often include false notches, designed to catch and mislead anyone attempting to pick them—adding an extra layer of security and complexity.

Safebusters.co.uk applied skillful manipulation, feeling for subtle feedback as each of the six levers was set correctly. Using the right tension and pick tools, he avoided triggering the false gates—a testament to his fine touch and expertise.
